“The first step in is a stunner.”

- The most frequent comment I have heard between the staff preview, the press preview, and the Member preview of Monet’s Garden is that walking into first gallery of the exhibition is “like walking into Oz.” You think you know what color is, and then you walk through those doors, and it’s like all your senses have been fooling you your whole life. It feels like you can breathe in color. It is intoxicating. ~AR

This very cool lithograph of French artist Edouard Manet’s work “Le rendez-vous des chats” is found in the Library’s Samuel Putnam Avery Collection, which is part of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs and contains over 3,000 etchings, lithographs, and drawings by prominent 19th-century printmakers. We thought it was the perfect black and white Caturday treat, so happy Caturday!

“Shareabouts is a mapping app for crowd sourcing, taking our recent work on the NYCDOT bike share map in a new direction. Shareabouts will have a simple, fun interface that makes it easy to add your voice to the map: suggest a location, add a comment, support other suggestions and share locations with your friends and neighbors. Shareabouts gets out of the way, letting you focus on getting points on the map. Behind the scenes, it’s a Rails app running on PostGIS spatial database, with a nice mapping front end. And behind all that, the real powerhouse of Julia and Andy.

We have some core design concepts in mind for Shareabouts:

Mobile is important, especially in lower-income and under-represented communities. Shareabouts needs to have a terrific experience on a mobile device.

Your crowdsourced mapping website should look great, tweaked just how you like it. Skinnability matters.

Open311 standards will be in Shareabouts’ DNA, so you can use it as a front-end for all sorts of civic apps.

Translations should be easy. Shareabouts will be a good fit, whether you want to say “Suggest a bike rack location” or “共有自転車置場がどこにあったらいいかな” .

Like many projects in their early days, there’s not much to look at yet. But as you know if you’re a follower of the open source way, being completely open from day zero is the Right Approach. We’re just getting going on something that we hope will be a pretty exciting project, and we want you on board from the very start of the journey. Here’s a list of ways you can get involved.

One hundred and twenty (120!) friends of Ottawa came together to make better neighbours on December 3rd.
Everyone wanted GPS bus data.
Here’s what they would do.

OC Transpo has this data now (rad!)
But they’ve closed it down to “make money off it” (not rad!)
Open Data promises Convenience, Inter-Government Collaboration, Sustainability, Community Access, Safety, Fun, Research, Art and Tourism.

Open Data will bring in tons of cash for OC Transpo.
But, more importantly, tons of happy riders.

Monet, Garden of the Princess, 1867

This just makes us even more excited for our exhibition next year, Monet’s Garden, which will open on May 19, 2012 and run through October 21. What have we got up our sleeves? We’re not ready to share those details yet, but we guarantee it will be amazing! Joyeux anniversaire M. Monet!

Happy Birthday to Claude Monet! Monet was born on this date in 1840, and had a long, prolific career until his death in 1926. Did you know the Allen Memorial Art Museum owns two paintings by this founder of Impressionism?

His painting, The Garden of the Princess (Louvre) dates to 1867, shortly before the exhibitions that brought prominence to the Impressionist movement. Wisteria is from the end of his life, around 1919-1920, and shows the much looser, almost abstract, brushwork that characterized this stage of his career. As such, the works make fantastic bookends for thinking about Monet’s body of work.

Both paintings are currently on display at the AMAM - but Wisteria will be on loan during the spring semester, so if you haven’t visited the museum yet, now’s the time!
